We are pleased to present a sweet new exhibition, The Call of Candy! At the turn of the 20th century, candy manufacturing was an enormous industry in New York, using sugar processed in the city's many refineries and ingredients imported from around the world. In 1908, Brooklyn alone produced 130 million pounds of confections, serving not only the 560 candy shops across Kings County, but also for national and international export and sale to the U.S. government as military rations.
From the Rockwood Candy Company near the Navy Yards, to Phoenix Candy Company of Greenwood Heights and the nearby Topps Chewing Gum of Industry City, to Manhattan’s Huyler’s Candy on Irving Place near Union Square, this exhibition displays wrappers, packages, and ephemera of NYC’s boisterous history of candy-making on an industrial scale.
Come explore the exhibit by [making an appointment to visit the Museum on Saturdays and Sundays!](https://square.site/book/EGTST609VR8N3/the-city-reliquary-brooklyn-ny) [Museum Members](https://withfriends.co/cityreliquary/join?utm_campaign=wf-newsletter) are always free, and so is the Bazooka gum (made by Topps, headquartered in Manhattan!).

And, our 2018 exhibit [Empire Skate: The Birthplace of Roller Disco](http://www.cityreliquary.org/empire-skate-the-birthplace-of-roller-disco/) was one of the most popular in the City Reliquary's history. A star figure of that exhibit - the Godfather of Roller Disco and creator of the Brooklyn Bounce, Bill Butler - was recently [profiled by the New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/30/arts/dance/bill-butler-empire-rollerdrome.html)! The article goes in-depth about Bill's time skating at Empire and also features some great photos and videos - check it out!
