**Embee Sunshade Co.
Opening This Saturday!**
Join us this Saturday from 5pm - 9pm to celebrate the City Reliquary's newest exhibition, featuring the Embee Sunshade Co.
The Embee Sunshade Co., located on Metropolitan Avenue near Graham Avenue, is one of Williamsburgh’s last surviving factories and produces custom umbrellas. If you’ve ever walked past this neighborhood institution, you may have noticed the seemingly random, white plastic letters hanging askew over their entrance, which read "M EE UNSH."
The missing letters fell off years ago, but regardless, the factory has continued to handcraft high-quality umbrellas without fail. Beginning in 1940, Embee products have become part of the iconic landscape of New York City, providing shade over hot-dog and roasted-nut carts, lifeguard stands, and city kiosks.
This exhibit features Embee promotional materials, parts and materials from the factory, photography by local artist Theo Coulombe of Brooklynphoto Studio, and a backyard filled with dozens of Embee Sunshades. It will be on view through October 28th, 2012, but join us this weekend for the opening reception. Refreshments will be available, including beer from another great Williamsburgh factory, the Brooklyn Brewery.
Transportation for this exhibit has been generously provided by Boxart Inc. Fine Art Services. |
