New Newsletter, Nude Architecture
We are migrating our newsletter system¹ and taking the opportunity to change some things up.
First, a new name: The Reliquarian. Frequency: approximately monthly, with a supplementary roughly-quarterly Members Edition sent only to active Reliquary members. RSS: yes.² Accessible & skimmable: we hope so.
Too frequent? Not enough? Better name? Reply with any feedback.
Note: If you had intended to unsubscribe in the past but find yourself back on this list, please unsubscribe at the bottom and we apologize for the migrating & merging mixup.
Tonight, 7–8:30pm: a steamy evening with Yuval
Nearby now? Come on over for a steamy free talk and book signing with Yuval Zohar on bathhouse culture and architecture in Japan, with some additional bits on the history of public baths in NYC. RSVP
Related: it’s NYC Sauna Week down the block.
Friday, March 6, 7–9pm: first First Friday (in a while)
A new tradition every first Friday of the month. Free admission for all, and the debut of our new short video series from Kyle Supley’s “Out There,” each profiling a collector. First up: Robert Bryan
Every Friday, noon–6pm: we’re open
Friday hours returned last month thanks to our eager crew of volunteer docents, and it’s been wonderful to once again welcome passersby on weekdays.
Through March 29: current exhibitions
Our two temporary exhibitions The COVID Material Culture Museum and Every Issue of Planet Magazine have both been extended through March 29, 2026.
The former preserves signage, tools, medicine, and art from the five years of COVID in the city, and the latter presents every single issue of a beloved smutty sci-fi magazine once published in NYC.
In the other rooms, our ever-morphing permanent collection has received a few new Statues of Liberty, a spiffed-up 13-year-old cake, and a no-longer-shrouded Petrella’s Point.
February 27: Volunteer Appreciation Night
We are planning our annual volunteers’ appreciation evening. The Reliquary has been entirely volunteer-run (from docents to cataloguers to the board of directors) since 2019. Interested in joining the crew and attending this private celebration at the museum? Email volunteer@cityreliquary.org.
April 1: 20 years
This April Fool’s Day at noon marks 20 years since we opened the door at 370 Metropolitan Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.³ Among other celebrations, we’re working on a physical reward for all members who pay annually (rather than monthly) on that date.
Nothing we can announce yet, but if you’d like to join those annual members already on the celebratory roster, consider joining now with annual payments. Current monthly members may upgrade easily. There is no discount for annual membership, but it helps us immensely in budget planning and lowered processing fees.
“Meet Me At” The Reliquary
Has it been a while? We would be honored to see you.
As a reminder, The City Reliquary is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon til 6pm.
Admission is $10; $8 for NYC residents; $5 for students, educators, and children ≤ 12 years old.
Members, as always, visit free. Membership starts at $10/month.
¹ From Mailchimp to Buttondown, if you are curious.
² Working on a way for members to unsubscribe from the monthly email while still receiving only the Member Edition. If you want that, hold off on unsubscribing for now, or email reliquarian@cityreliquary.org.
³ We were founded in 2002, and for the first four years existed in our founder Dave’s apartment window one block north at Grand & Havemeyer. A fragment of the original painted window frame sits in the first vitrine straight ahead as you walk through our entrance turnstile. Indeed, that means next year is The Reliquary’s twenty-fifth.
This edition was prepared by Jacob, Director of Outreach & Engagement.
